In every Hindu household it is customary to light the oil deepam ( lamp) twice, in the morning and in the evening. The Light symbolize the absence of darkness, grief and sorrows and indicates inside knowledge illumination along with enlighten. Lighting of the holy lamp is the source of complete enlightenment. It is trying to expel not just worldly darkness but our inner demons too. The oil or ghee in the lamp symbolizes our vaasanas or negative tendencies and the wick, the ego. The wick is main object which is using to light an oil lamp and actually wick is a symbol of power and brightness where a lamp emits lighting. When lit by spiritual knowledge, the vaasanas get slowly exhausted and the ego too finally perishes. Why not light a bulb or tube light? That too would remove darkness.. But the traditional oil lamp has a further spiritual significance. The flame of a lamp always burns upwards. Similarly we should acquire such knowledge as to take us towards higher ideals. A very household item to ancient South Indian homes, still has its whole world charm intact. Even in today's modern times no cultural festival is declared opened before lighting such lamps which are beholders of our rich culture. The different forms of God on top of each lamp only add to its divine connection.
